A French Bistro in Mexico!
Wherever I travel outside of France or my home in Canada, I am always on the lookout for a little bit of Paris.
Often I find something!
I have been very fortunate to have spent a month in Mexico in a little town called Bucerias north of Puerta Vallarta on the West Coast.
I was not so fortunate to have broken my wrist on my second day. I was merely dangling my feet in the pool below our condo when I went to get up and slipped.
Down I went hard on my left wrist and it was not a pretty sight.
I required surgery and spent a couple of days in the hospital. After a few weeks, I was still recovering and typing with just one hand.
Fortunately, it was not my right hand that was affected.
But I digress.
The cobbled streets of Bucerias are chockablock with market vendors, local taco stalls, open-air bars with live bands, and restaurants with menus boasting seafood, Mexican burritos, quesadillas, and the creamiest guacamole and tortilla chips! (So addictive!)
A French restaurant is the last thing one would expect there. But down one leafy tree-lined street, one appeared called Le Bistro, and of course, I had to try it.
French Cuisine in Bucerías
The restaurant was started by Sandrine and Jean-Christophe who originated from the Pyrenees area of southwestern France and headed to Puerto Vallarta in 2004.
Six years later they launched Le Bistrot and have been delighting diners with traditional preparations of French cuisine ever since.
Hot dishes such as the duck confit, rack of lamb, and boeuf bourguignon adorn the menu but they seemed to me to be at odds with the Mexican climate, and indeed there was no air conditioning, so I opted for lighter fare.
I started with the most divine, pate de foie gras. Arriving for dramatic effect on a black plate, it was a melt-in-your-mouth experience as good as anything I have had in France.
The main course was equally tantalizing.
I chose the Fish Duo Provençal to see how they would match the local fish, in this case, Red Snapper and Mahi-Mahi, with a French twist. I was not disappointed. Sandrine arrived with the dish, and a small pitcher of a bechamel-like sauce infused with a hint of fennel. (I am guessing here but I think that is what it was)
Every mouthful was a taste experience that I will remember for a long time.
I don’t usually eat dessert, but there was no leaving this French restaurant in Mexico without trying the Crème brûlée.
The first crack of the spoon on the burnt sugar crust… Oh my is all I have to say.
It made me long for France…and happily, it won’t be long now.

Or have you found one on vacation somewhere too?

Really sorry to hear about your slippery accident – what a bummer! But it obviously didn’t take you long to venture out! Glad you found an authentic French Bistro – what a delight that must have been!
Thank you so much Gretchen! We had a great tine despite the mishap
Hope you are doing well and enjoying Spring where you are! Diana
We love Bucerias! It’s time to get back there, but it’s become too popular to book our favourite condo; where did you stay, Diana?
Oh, You know. A lot of construction in Bucerias at the moment and the streets and sidewalks are treacherous but still a wonderful place to visit. We stayed in a condo complex at the north end of town called QUADRANT. Three massive swimming pools and gardens. All through Airbnb!
Oh my goodness! 🎉 Thank you so much!
I look forward to reading this beautiful coffee table book! Marilyn Savage
