Dinner Chez Moi: 50 French Secrets to Joyful Eating and Entertaining Hardcover – April 4, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
When Elizabeth Bard, a New Yorker raised on Twizzlers and instant mac and cheese, fell for a handsome Frenchman and moved to Paris, she discovered a whole new world of culinary delights. First in Paris, then in a tiny village in Provence, Elizabeth explored the markets, incorporating new ingredients and rituals into her everyday meals and routines.
After 15 years of cooking in her own French kitchen, making French friends -- and observing her slim and elegant French mother-in-law -- Elizabeth has gathered a treasure trove of information that has radically changed her own eating habits for the better. She realized that what most Americans call "dieting" -- smaller portions, no snacking, a preference for seasonal fruits and vegetables, and limited sugar -- the French simply call "eating." And they do it with pleasure, gusto, and flair.
With wit, sound advice, and easy-to-follow recipes, Bard lets her readers in on a range of delightful -- and useful -- French secrets to eating and living well, including hunger as the new foreplay, the top five essential French cooking tools and 15 minute meals popular throughout France, and the concept of benevolent dictatorship: why French kids eat veggies, and how to get yours to eat them, too. Whether you're ready for a complete kitchen transformation or simply looking for dinner party inspiration, Dinner Chez Moi is a fun, practical, and charming how-to guide that will add a dash of joie de vivre to your kitchen -- and your life!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2017I read all three of Elizabeth Bard's books and this one is by far the very best. She does a great job of capturing the essence of every day French life, the French mentality and of course food. I tried to pace myself reading so as not to finish it too quickly. When I did finish it, I wanted to read it again right away. I have just about all the major works written about French life and as an eccentric Francophile who has also spent a lot of time in France, i could just as easily have found what she wrote about to be nothing new. But the joie de vivre throughout the entire book is addicting. And the wit and humor of juxtaposing her own life (eating neon orange mac and chees for example) with her new mode of living makes the reader laugh while nodding in agreement. The book is just fun to read as well as instructive. A winner of a book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2018I have all 3 of Elizabeth Bard's very charming, and well written foodie memoirs all of them with recipes. All of Elizabeth's books are worth having, they're all very special. I just came across a wonderful recipe in this book with spiced chickpeas and garlic/ ginger shrimp it sounds wonderful, although I'm going to add tomatoes . I always have my homemade garam marsala on hand, and lots of spices and fresh herbs. I have all the ingredients on hand except the shrimp which I'll pick up sunday morning at our local SM fish market, I'll make it monday night , and we're going on. vacation on tuesday morning, so. this will be perfect.
I made the recipe, but with various tweaks like putting in chopped red pepper, tomatoes, onions, garlic, fresh herbs to garnish it, I made various changes in the cooking method, I think my version is much better, and I use fresh shrimp, not something pulled from my freezer, but Bard's idea for this recipe is very good, but the tweaking makes it far superior. We're going to have it again later this week, and I'll serve with it a special salad which will go nicely with this shrimp and chick pea recipe.
It's a charming book, but I would have liked more memoir material/ new information on her and her family in France, her first book was the absolute best, it's still very worth having.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2017A lovely book all around. Elizabeth Bard once again combines her American sensibilities with the enviable habits of her adopted French home so that nothing is lost in translation when trying to eat with a bit of flair, and a good deal more flavor and health. Her writing is as warm as ever—throughout, you feel as though you're sitting at the kitchen table with a friend, listening to not tourist tips but the lifestyle information that matters. Small, simple, but meaningful changes will result in meals that are more delightful in the making and the eating (yum!). Her recipes are always at the ready in my kitchen. This book would also make a lovely gift for anyone even remotely interested in cooking or France. And if that's you, then a great self-gift!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2017I am a longtime fan of Elizabeth's and this book does not disappoint. A deviation from her novels, this book is more of a peak inside her kitchen with lots of helpful tips and wonderful recipes. I read the whole thing cover to cover like a novel. Then I tabbed all the recipes I want to try like a cookbook! Plus, this beautiful watercolors are back. They really bring the whole volume together beautifully.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2017Elizabeth Bard's books are all a joy to read, and this one was no exception. The format of leading you through an entertaining/cookbook by 50 secrets is an easy read, that makes it read almost like a novel and makes you long to live in Paris. It inspired me to reread her "Lunch in Paris" which reiterates some of the same wisdom.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2017This is a pleasant cookbook full of anecdotes and good doable home recipes from Bard's life in France; but if you are already a fan of Elizabeth Bard a lot of this material will look familiar to you. She's repackaged many of her stories and quite a few of her recipes from previous books here. It's an attractive new "package" but I am disappointed the material was not all new too. I feel a bit cheated actually as not enough recipes are new to justify purchase if you own the previous books. If not, then yes, I do recommend the book. It has appealing recipes written in an accessible style that you will want to try yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2017Good and interesting recipes. Some quite easy.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2017A delightful book with snippets of her life in Provence and lots of wonderful recipes! Sure to give folks who have not experienced the beauty of this region a wonderful taste of the countryside, the people and the amazing food it has to offer! I'm so glad to have ghis book!

Everything is fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner
I loved Elizabeth Bard's previous two books and I love this one too, unlike the previous reviewer. Lots of great 'secrets' along with simple recipes, several of which I have made and they were all delicious. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I read, and loved, her first two books, both memoirs-with-recipes, a genre I adore. With none of its advance publicity explaining otherwise, I expected this to be more of the same.
But it isn't. It's a cookery book, plain and simple. Not a memoir in sight. And not a very good cookery book at that. You certainly couldn't accuse it of being comprehensive, and its style is irritatingly patronising. She might do well to assume that anyone who is likely to buy a book like this will already have a good deal of cooking tucked under his or her belt, and will be looking for inspiration to send them soaring to new heights, rather than a repetition of the basics.
I wonder what went wrong? Perhaps just too many projects on the go at the same time? Hard to run a mini ice cream empire and a family life and be a full-time author at the same time?
